Der Bologneser stammt wahrscheinlich vom Bichon aus Süd-Italien und Malta ab. Sie haben sich im 11. oder 12. Jahrhundert in Bologna entwickelt. Große Popularität erreichten sie im 1500 Jahrhundert bei regierende Familien und Adeligen als Gesellschaftshunde. Die Bologneser kamen vor zirka 200 Jahren über die Kanarischen Inseln nach England . Derzeit ist die Rasse relativ selten, sogar in Italien.  Aber einige Züchter in Europa haben angefangen diese Rasse wieder populär zu machen. Der Bolognese ist ein kleiner, aktiver Hund. Er ist weiß mit  langem lockigem Fell über Kopf und Körper. Die Ohren sind weit auseinander, so das der Kopf etwas eckig erscheint. Sie sind ähnlich dem Bichon Frise, jedoch sind sie quadratischer , mit feineren Knochen. Er ist ein intelligenter Hund, der relativ leicht zu trainieren ist. Sie sind sehr gefällig und Lernen sehr schnell. 

The Bolognese is thought to have descended from the Bichons of southern Italy and Malta. They were developed centuries ago in Bologna in Italy, as early as the 11th and 12th centuries. They enjoyed a lot of popularity with the ruling families and the nobility in the 1500's as companion dogs. They made their way into Britain two hundred years ago, via the Canary Islands. Today the breed is rare, even in Italy, however a few breeders in Europe have started to restore the breed to its present day popularity. The Bolognese small, active little dog, it is white in appearance with a long coat covering the entire head and body. The ears are set quite wide apart giving it a square appearance. They resemble the Bichon Frise but are more square and finer in bone.The Bolognese is an intelligent dog, that is relatively easy to train. They love to please and find learning easy.
